NBA: Nike Cans Plans To Release Allen Iverson-ish Sneaker This Winter
Sneaky sneaky Nike! They have been working on a throwback campaign entitled Zoom Flight ’96 a look back at the 1996 NBA draft including some kicks that looked like they were giving honor to Allen Iverson. No bueno.
AI has had a deal with Reebok for what seems like his entire career 96 until last year when he officially retired…and even now still. Reebok is also working on an Iverson throwback slated for next year, featuring the pump!! Remember that?!?!? Be on the lookout for the Villa X. Allen and Jadakiss are slated to launch the new sneaker shortly.
One of his original sneakers, The Answer was a top seller, so of course AI is trying to protect his cash flow. His attorney reached out to Nike stating:
“Nike is clearly trying to use Allen Iverson’s celebrity status and persona to promote Nike’s shoes…There’s no other No. 3 that played for the 76ers that came out of the 1996 draft. For Nike to use his status to sell shoes, and not get his permission, to not compensate him, is bad business.”
Nike’s spokesperson responded with this via e-mail:
“Nike has made a business decision to not move forward with the shoe in the red/blue and white/purple colorways…However, two colorways inspired by the original 1996 colorways will still be available for purchase.”
SMH…If it ain’t about the money…
